The ownerDocument property returns the root element (document object) for a node.

Syntax

nodeObject.ownerDocument


Example

The following code fragment loads "books.xml" into xmlDoc using loadXMLDoc() and returns the root element of the first <title> node:

xmlDoc=loadXMLDoc("books.xml");

x=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("title")[0].ownerDocument;

document.write("Nodename: " + x.nodeName);
document.write(" (nodetype: " + x.nodeType + ")");

The output of the code above will be:

Nodename: #document (nodetype: 9)
