The formenctype attribute is supported in all major browsers, except Internet Explorer.


Definition and Usage

The formenctype attribute specifies how the form-data should be encoded when submitting it to the server (only for forms with method="post")

The formenctype attribute overrides the enctype attribute of the <form> element.

Note: The formenctype attribute is used with type="submit" and type="image".


Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

The formenctype attribute is new in HTML5.


Syntax

<input formenctype="value" />

Attribute Values

Value Description
application/x-www-form-urlencoded Default. All characters are encoded before sent (spaces are converted to "+" symbols, and special characters are converted to ASCII HEX values)
multipart/form-data No characters are encoded
text/plain Spaces are converted to "+" symbols, but no special characters are encoded
