Definition and Usage

The escape() function encodes a string.

This function makes a string portable, so it can be transmitted across any network to any computer that supports ASCII characters.

This function encodes special characters, with the exception of: * @ - _ + . /

Tip: Use unescape() to decode strings.

Syntax

escape(string)

Parameter Description
string Required. The string to be encoded

The escape() function is supported in all major browsers.


Tips and Notes

Note: The escape() function should not be used to encode URIs. Use the encodeURI() function instead.
