JavaScript match() Method

Definition and Usage

The match() method searches for a specified value in a string.

This method is similar to indexOf() and lastIndexOf(), but it returns the specified value, instead of the position of the string.

Syntax

stringObject.match(searchvalue)

Parameter	Description
searchvalue	Required. Specifies a string value to search for

Tips and Notes

Note: The match() method is case sensitive!

Note: This method returns null if the string value to search for never occurs.

Example

In this example we will do different searches within a "Hello world!" string:

var str="Hello world!";
document.write(str.match("world") + "<br />");
document.write(str.match("World") + "<br />");
document.write(str.match("worlld") + "<br />");
document.write(str.match("world!"));

</script>

The output of the code above will be:

world
null
null
world!
