Browser Support

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Google Chrome Safari

The outline property is supported in all major browsers.

Note: The outline property is not supported in IE7 and earlier. IE8 requires a !DOCTYPE. IE9 supports it.

Tips and Notes

An outline is a line around an element. It is displayed around the margin of the element. However, it is different from the border property.

The outline is not a part of the element's dimensions, therefore the element's width and height properties do not contain the width of the outline.

Example

Example

Change the width, style, and color of the outline around a div element:

<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
#ex1
{
border:1px solid red;
outline:green dotted thick;
}
</style>
<script type="text/javascript">
function displayResult()
{
document.getElementById("ex1").style.outline="thick solid #0000FF";
}
</script>
</head>
<body>

<div id="ex1">This is some text.</div>
<br />
<button type="button" onclick="displayResult()">Change outline</button>

</body>
</html>
