Definition and Usage

The background shorthand property sets all the background properties in one declaration.

The properties that can be set, are (in order): background-color, background-image, background-repeat, background-attachment, and background-position.

It does not matter if one of the values above are missing, e.g. background:#ff0000 url('smiley.gif'); is allowed.

Default value: not specified
Inherited: no
Version: CSS1
JavaScript syntax: object.style.background="white url(paper.gif) repeat-y"

The background property is supported in all major browsers.

Note: No versions of Internet Explorer (including IE8) support the property value "inherit".


Property Values

Value Description
background-color Specifies the background color to be used. See background-color for possible values
background-image Specifies the background image to be used. See background-image for possible values
background-repeat Specifies how to repeat the background image. See background-repeat for possible values
background-attachment Specifies whether a background image is fixed or scrolls with the rest of the page. See background-attachment for possible values
background-position Specifies the position of the background image. See background-position for possible values
inherit Specifies that the setting of the background property should be inherited from the parent element
