Definition and Usage

The type attribute specifies the MIME type of the target URL.

This attribute is only used if the href attribute is set.

Note: This attribute is purely advisory.


Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

The type attribute is new for the <area> tag in HTML5.
