Definition and Usage

The max-width property sets the maximum width of an element.

Note: The max-width property does not include padding, borders, or margins!

Default value: none
Inherited: no
Version: CSS2
JavaScript syntax: object.style.maxWidth="100px"

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Google Chrome Safari

The max-width property is supported in all major browsers.

Note: Internet Explorer does not support the property value "inherit".


Property Values

Value Description
none No maximum width. This is default
length Defines the maximum width in px, cm, etc. 
% Defines the maximum width in percent of the containing block
inherit Specifies that the value of the max-width property should be inherited from the parent element
