The xmlEncoding property returns the encoding of the document.

The following code fragment loads "books.xml"
into xmlDoc using
loadXMLDoc(), displays the XML encoding, standalone attribute,
and XML version of the document:
xmlDoc=loadXMLDoc("books.xml");
