Definition and Usage

The ownerDocument property returns the document object the selected element belongs to.

Syntax

elementNode.ownerDocument
 

Example

The following code fragment loads "books.xml" into xmlDoc using loadXMLDoc() and gets name and node type from the owner document of the first <title> element:

xmlDoc=loadXMLDoc("books.xml");

x=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("title")[0];
x=x.ownerDocument;

document.write("Nodename: " + x.nodeName);
document.write(" (nodetype: " + x.nodeType + ")");

The output of the code above will be:

Nodename: #document (nodetype: 9)
