W3C SMIL Activities

SMIL adds timing and media synchronization support to the web.

SMIL

SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) was designed to enable multimedia presentations on the web.

A SMIL presentation can be composed of audio, video, images, text, and other media types.

SMIL is an XML based HTML-like language.

HTML+TIME

HTML+TIME stands for Timed Interactive Multimedia Extensions for HTML. It is a proposal for adding SMIL 1.0 timing and synchronization support to HTML.

HTML+TIME was submitted to the W3C by Microsoft, Macromedia, Compaq/Digital and Digital Renaissance.

HTML+SMIL

HTML+SMIL (a modification of HTML+TIME) was included in an early SMIL 2.0 Working Draft.

When SMIL 2.0 became a W3C Recommendation, HTML+SMIL was removed from SMIL 2.0 and added as a separate Working Draft renamed XHTM+SMIL

XHTML+SMIL

XHTM+SMIL provides support for SMIL 2.0 functionality like animation, media, timing, synchronization, and transitions directly in XHTML.

XHTML+SMIL is currently a Note submitted to the W3C with the intention that it can be used as a basis to the work of integrating SMIL functionality into XHTML.

15. June 1998
SMIL 1.0 became a W3C Recommendation.

18. September 1998
HTML+TIME was submitted to W3C by Microsoft, Macromedia, Compaq/Digital and Digital Renaissance as a proposal for adding SMIL 1.0 timing and synchronization support to HTML.

25. February 2000
HTML+TIME was added to the SMIL 2.0 Working Draft, renamed as HTML+SMIL.

22. June 2000
HTML+SMIL was removed from the SMIL 2.0 Working Draft.

07. August 2001
SMIL 2.0 became a W3C Recommendation

07. August 2001
HTML+SMIL became a separate Working Draft, renamed XHTML+SMIL.

31. January 2002
XHTML+SMIL was resubmitted as a W3C Note.
