Definition and Usage

The clear property specifies which sides of an element where other floating elements are not allowed.

Default value: none
Inherited: no
Version: CSS1
JavaScript syntax: object.style.clear="left"

The clear property is supported in all major browsers.

Note: The value "inherit" is not supported in IE7 and earlier. IE8 requires a !DOCTYPE. IE9 supports "inherit".


Property Values

Value Description
left No floating elements allowed on the left side
right No floating elements allowed on the right side
both No floating elements allowed on either the left or the right side
none Default. Allows floating elements on both sides
inherit Specifies that the value of the clear property should be inherited from the parent element
