Definition and Usage

The width property sets the width of an element.

Note: The width property does not include padding, borders, or margins!

Default value: auto
Inherited: no
Version: CSS1
JavaScript syntax: object.style.width="50px"

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Google Chrome Safari

The width property is supported in all major browsers.

Note: The value "inherit" is not supported in IE7 and earlier. IE8 requires a !DOCTYPE. IE9 supports "inherit".


Property Values

Value Description Play it
auto The browser calculates the width. This is default Play it »
length Defines the width in px, cm, etc.  Play it »
% Defines the width in percent of the containing block Play it »
inherit Specifies that the value of the width property should be inherited from the parent element
