About Unix Timestamps

A Unix timestamp (also known as Epoch time or POSIX time) is the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 (midnight UTC).

  • Timestamps are timezone-independent
  • Standard 32-bit timestamps will overflow on January 19, 2038
  • Millisecond timestamps (13 digits) are also common in JavaScript

For more information about timestamps, visit our JavaScript Dates tutorial.
