HTML <img> tag

Definition and Usage

The img element defines an image.

Differences Between HTML and XHTML

In HTML the <img> tag has no end tag.

In XHTML the <img> tag must be properly closed.

The "align", "border", "hspace", and "vspace" attributes of the image element were deprecated in HTML 4.01.

The "align", "border", "hspace", and "vspace" attributes of the image element are not supported in XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD.

Browser Support

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Google Chrome Safari

The tag is supported in all major browsers.

If you use the alt attribute in in most browsers (except Internet Explorer) on images and image maps the text will not show on mouse-over.

The alt is meant to be used as an alternative text if the image doesn't load, not as a mouse-over text.

For full support for mouse-over comments on images or image maps, use the title attribute in the <img> tag.

Example: <img src="image.gif" alt="bla" title="bla bla bla" />

Example

Source Output
<img src="angry.gif" alt="Angry" /> Angry
