HTML and CSS Design Systems

HTML & CSS: Design Systems

A design system unifies design and development with shared foundations, reusable components, and documented standards.

HTML and CSS provide the blueprint for consistent interfaces.

Foundations

  • Establish tokens for color, typography, spacing, radius, and elevation.
  • Document responsive breakpoints, grid usage, and motion guidelines.
  • Store tokens as CSS custom properties or JSON for cross-platform use.

Note: Design tokens are named values (like --color-primary) that keep teams using the same colors and spacing everywhere.

Component library

  • Pair semantic HTML with well-scoped CSS modules or utility classes.
  • Provide variations (primary/secondary, states, sizes) through modifiers.
  • Include accessibility notes, keyboard behavior, and ARIA mappings.

Note: Modifiers are extra classes, such as button--secondary, that tweak the base component without duplicating code.

Documentation & governance

  • Document usage rules, do/don't examples, and code snippets.
  • Set up contribution guidelines, review processes, and versioning.
  • Track adoption metrics and gather feedback from product teams.

Note: Adoption metrics can be as simple as counting how many apps use each component.

Tooling

  • Host docs with tools like Storybook, Zeroheight, or custom static sites.
  • Automate distribution via npm packages, design tokens pipelines, and CI.
  • Use visual regression tests to catch unintended CSS changes.
