Definition and Usage

The substring() method extracts the characters in a string between two specified indices, and returns a new string.

Syntax

stringObject.substring(indexA,indexB)

Parameter Description
indexA Required. Where to start the extraction. Must be a numeric value. Starts at 0
indexB Optional. Where to stop the extraction. Must be a numeric value. If omitted, substring() extracts to the end of the string

Example

Extract some characters from a string:

var str="Hello world!";
document.write(str.substring(3)+"<br />");
document.write(str.substring(3,7));

</script>

The output of the code above will be:

lo world!
lo w
