Definition and Usage

The defaultPlaybackRate property sets or returns the default playback speed of the audio.

Setting this property will only change the default playback speed, not the current. To change the current playback speed, use the playbackRate property.


Browser Support

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Google Chrome Safari

The defaultPlaybackRate property is only supported in all major browsers, except Safari.

Note: The defaultPlaybackRate property is not supported in Internet Explorer 8 and earlier versions.


Syntax

Return the defaultPlaybackRate property:

audioObject.defaultPlaybackRate

Set the defaultPlaybackRate property:

audioObject.defaultPlaybackRate=number

Property Values

Value Description
number Indicates the default playback speed of the audio.
Example values:
  • 1.0 is normal speed
  • 0.5 is half speed (slower)
  • 2.0 is double speed (faster)
  • -1.0 is backwards, normal speed
  • -0.5 is backwards, half speed

Note: The value 0.0 is invalid and throws a NOT_SUPPORTED_ERR exception

Technical Details

Return Value: A Number, representing the default playback speed
Default Value: 1.0
